Aesthetic concern has now become a problem not only for women but also for men. Aesthetic and surgical interventions, which are not evaluated only in terms of health, now tend to provide physical integrity. Gynecomastia is one of the issues that pose a problem for men and require surgical intervention.
What is Gynecomastia?
Gynecomastia in men means benign, excessive breast growth due to hormonal irregularities. It is generally seen in men aged 12-13 years or older. Although it does not cause a harmful situation to health, it may cause loss of self-confidence and psychological problems, especially in young people. Gynecomastia does not regress itself by hormonal treatments. It is necessary to remove the growing breast tissue.
What are the Symptoms of Gynecomastia?
Gynecomastia symptoms are more than one. The most important of these are the sensitivity felt by the touch in the breasts and swelling in the breast tissue. Pain in the breasts, nipple discharge in one breast or both breasts, and a lump sensation just below the nipple are among the symptoms. Symptoms begin after the unbalanced size of the sensitive nipples is visible. Sometimes these symptoms can also be seen in newborn babies.
How is Gynecomastia Surgery Performed?
When men go to a doctor with a complaint of breast size, it is not immediately diagnosed. After the manual examination is completed, hormone tests are performed. Then how much fat will be taken from the breasts is decided. Gynecomastia treatment is performed by removing excess fat from the breast with 2 different surgerical methods. If the mammary gland to be removed is soft and oily, it is removed from the breast by liposuction method. If the mammary gland is hard and large, open surgery method should be used. A small incision is made under the nipple where it meets the skin. The mammary gland is removed from this incision. The patient is put to sleep under general anesthesia and the operation starts. The duration of the operation generally takes between 1.5-2 hours. After removal of previously determined tissue, the small incisions are closed aesthetically and so that the scar will be as small as possible and then chest area is covered with a bandage.
What Happens After Gynecomastia Surgery?
After the gynecomastia surgery is completed, the patient should rest for 2-3 days. As a nutrition, the patient should not consume solid foods and should not force himself in this process. It is quite normal to have bruises, edema or tenderness in the area. This situation will begin to improve within 2-3 days. Painkillers given by the doctor can be used for bruises and pain that may occur. The use of corset has a great contribution to the healing process. Therefore, the corset should be worn for the period determined by the doctor from the beginning of the surgery. The recovery interval is determined by the doctor as 2-3 weeks. After 7-10 days, you can take a shower and start light walks. Sports can be done after 4 weeks. With the completion of 1 week after the operation, the patient can return to his daily life, but heavy movements should be avoided. In general, the chest area should not be exposed to direct sunlight for the first 3 months. The maintenance process is as important as the surgical interventions performed during surgery.
One of the most curious issues after gynecomastia surgery is whether the same problem will be encountered again. Although the success rate of these operations is very high, it is rarely possible to be repeated. In excessive weight gain, sometimes a small sagging is experienced in the operation area. Fat may occur under the breast due to weight gain.
